PC-Type+ sample multiple document file % .LEVEL_A \\OHNT TOC\ .LEVEL_B \\HNT TOC\ .LEVEL_C \HNT TOC\ .LEVEL_D \ NT TOC .LEVEL_E \ NT TOC .HDR_LABEL "Chapter" "Section" "Figure" "Table" .LEVEL_FORCE 0.0.0.0 0 0 \\\\ \\\\ \\\\ even \Page %\\Multiple File Documentation\ odd \.\\Page %\ \\.<->\\ \\\\ \\\\ \\.<->\\ swap \\\.\ \\\\ \\\\ d0010Description of Text File This text file is the beginning of the body of the document. Normally there would be a number of such files, but for the tutorial, we have limited it to Tutorial one. d0120Headings An inordinate number of headings has been placed in Headings this file to facilitate seeing how the Table of Table of Contents Contents get constructed. d0120Page Numbers Since this is the first file in the body of the document, and since we wanted to go from page numbers represented by Roman Numerals to normal page numbers, Roman Numerals we started this file with the Absolute page break line Absolute page break \\ Page break (absolute) set to page number 1. Normally there would not be a page break at the top of a Multiple Document file Multiple document file unless you want to force an ODD page and there is no ODD page \\ Page (odd) heading at the beginning of the text which supports starting at an ODD page. d0120Footers Also notice that footers have been turned back on so that they will print. d0120Parameter Duplication The .LEVEL_n lines and .HDR_LABEL line between the .HDR_LABEL .LEVEL_n Document Dflts Special Lines are duplicated here Special lines exactly as they occur in the Master file. This is Master file handy if you later make some minor changes to the file (which will not alter the page numbering) and want to print out this file only. For this reason the .LEVEL_FORCE parameter line has also been included. .LEVEL_FORCE d0230Print One of Many Files You would print this single file by setting the Print Print mode mode option of the Print Options window to " STD" and then pressing F10. d0230Parameters Inside Document File If you print a Multiple File Document with the Print Print mode mode option set to " DOC", the entire group of lines between the Document Dflts Special Lines will be ignored. Only the parameter settings in the Master Master file file are used when the Print mode is set to "DOC". d0120Header/Footer Definition The Header and Footer Definitions are also duplicated Footer definition Header definition here for the same reason as the Parameter duplication. Normally you would not do this. d0230Header/Footer Method One I generally create a PCTYPE.PRO file in a document PCTYPE.PRO directory which is set specifically for the document I am working on. Part of the profile file is the Default Header and Footer definitions. I set these definitions as I want them for the body of the document. I can then use the " default hdr/ftr" Defalut hdr/ftr Special Line to reinitialize the headers to the profile settings in case I want to change them as I did at the beginning of this document. Since your profile header and footer definitions probably don't match these settings, they were included here. d0230Header/Footer Method Two Another good approach to handling Header and Footer Footer definition Header definition definitions is to include all the definitions in the Master file. This keeps them all in one place where Master file they can easily be changed together and provides visibility for your entire document. Using this approach there is no need to have any Header or Footer definitions in your files. d0230Header/Footer Method Three Another method of dealing with Header and Footer Footer definition Header defintion definitions is to include them all in each file of your text. In this manner, each separate file maintains some independence from the others. The problem with this approach is that if you have a standard setting, if you change the standard you have to make the changes to all the files which reference the standard. Method Two, above, is probably a better approach. Then, if you need to print a file independently, you can always copy the Header and Footer definitions from the Master file. Master file d0010Creating the Table of Contents The Table of Contents is created by setting the Print Print mode Table of Contents mode option in the Print Options window to " TOC", and Print options window then pressing All the headings will be found, passed to INDEX.EXE, Index.exe and the print file referenced in the Master file, Master file SMPTOC.PCT, will be created. SMPTOC.PCT d0010Creating the Index Once the Table of Contents is completed and you are happy with the way it looks, you can create the Index Index file file referenced in the Master file as SMPIND.PCT. SMPIND.PCT To create the Index, set the Print mode option in the Print mode Print Options window to " IND" and press Print options window All the print markers, there are a number of them sprinkled through this document, will be sent to the INDEX.EXE program where they will be inspected, Index.exe sorted, and organized to produce an Index. d0120Modifying the Index You will normally want to do some editing of the index Index file file since it is returned as a single column and it is unlikely that no additions, deletions nor corrections will have to be made. d0120XREF File Since the .XREF line exists in the parameter list in .XREF the Master file, an XREF file will be created with the XREF file filename XREF on your default directory. This is a Default directory cross reference file to cross reference the location of page numbers in your document with page numbers in Page numbers your files. Inspect the file. d0010Printing the Document Now change the Print mode option in the Print Options Print options window Print mode window to " DOC" and press F10 when the Master file is Master file the current active file in PC-Type. If you like, you PC-Type II can break out the print into separate files for each page by setting the " Output target file" to a filespec Output target file Page breakout on your disk with an extension of " .###". You can print the entire file to disk by setting the target file to any filespec on your disk. You can send the Filespec output to your printer by specifying LPT1 as the target file. Or you can just view the document on your screen as it would appear if it were printed. To do this, set the Print mode to " VWD" and press Print mode d0010Single File Output You could edit the file SMPDC2.PCT, make some minor SMPDC2.PCT changes, and print it separately by selecting the Print mode " STD", or you could view it by selecting Print mode the " VWS" Print mode option and pressing
